Traditional thatched cottages were once very typical of this part of Ireland and, although the six that make up this beach-side hamlet look so immaculate that you could be forgiven for thinking they are new, they are actually about 300 years old and have recently been re-thatched and renovated to a very high standard. While holidays would not have been part of the lives of the original inhabitants, the miles of sandy beaches have made this a popular family holiday area for many generations - something that visitors to The Cottages will quickly appreciate especially as, being midway between Bettystown and Laytown, the nearest stretch of beach is not likely to be crowded, even in high summer, and, off-season, you could walk for miles and hardly see soul.
